EPSY 822 – Educational Scales, Questionnaires, and Sampling
I taught a session of this class detailing the creation of summative test questions and the process those questions endure within a testing company. Summative questions are best thought of as those appearing on some sort of high-stakes exam, like a state assessment or certification exam. The session was broken into two parts. The first part detailed different types of test questions, the anatomy of a test question, and best practices for writing summative test questions. The second half was dedicated to leading the class through an activity that simulated the test development process. In groups, the class created a series of test questions. Once created, the groups exchanged test questions and edited the questions based on the best practices previously discussed. Then, each group had their edited test questions returned to them to reconcile the edits. Below is a PDF file of the PowerPoint used for the class. It should be noted that it was used as a guide and not the main point, so some talking points may not be accurately reflected.
